This external sponsorship/academic focused summer internship, beginning in June 2019, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students with an interest in social media and digital communications to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.
This internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 10 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
The social media internship will involve hands-on work with a team of social media professionals and will help prepare students for a career in social media and communications. Students will learn how to draft social posts about reports, blogs posts, events and other Brookings content on critical policy issues. Additionally, students will learn best practices for social media monitoring and listening, reporting on growth and engagement, and assist the social media team with research and other strategy projects. In addition to learning what a career in social media entails, students will also have the opportunity to assist the broader communications team and to participate in activities that support the institution’s overall communication goals.
In addition to providing support to the office of Communications directly, interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Graduate or undergraduate students (who have completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in a relevant field. Recent college graduates are also eligible to apply. Students should have a basic understanding of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit and other social networks. They should also be familiar with how nonprofits, brands and media use these networks and the related terminology and types of engagement for each. Experience with social measurement tools, social advertising, Google Analytics, or Omniture Site Catalyst are a plus.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
