This external sponsorship/academic focused summer internship, beginning in June 2019, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students with an interest in an interest in information technology to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.
The intern will work along-side Service Desk support technicians to assist with the Windows 10 institution-wide rollout project. Intern will also assist with general IT Service Desk support duties. This internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the IT field. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 10 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
Interns will have the opportunity to work with the project owner as well as Service Desk team to assist with retrieving and wiping existing computer equipment, preparing machines for upgrade (imaging), installing software, and other project duties as assigned. The intern will assist other staff in IT, primarily infrastructure engineers and other project staff. The intern may interact with the end-user community, however, primarily will not be user-facing. Intern will also interact with the Brookings IT Service Desk team to learn the Service Desk operation, roles, and general support duties including Active Directory account management, network printing support, end user device support, and on/off-boarding of employees from a technical perspective.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Graduate or undergraduate student (who has completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. information technology). Exposure to IT support or project work is desirable. Experience in a Help Desk environment is desirable. IT related project work experience is a plus. Additional skills and qualities include attention to detail and critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and the desire to learn.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
