This external sponsorship/academic credit-focused spring internship, beginning in January 2019, is an opportunity for graduate students, recent college graduates, or undergraduate students in their senior year with an interest in energy security, climate change, and foreign affairs to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment
This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 10 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
The intern will assist with supporting the research and programmatic objectives of the Energy Security and Climate Initiative, and its relevant scholars and staff, on current issues in energy, climate, and international affairs.
Research support: The intern will assist with background research and/or literature reviews on energy and climate topics, including collecting, synthesizing, and/or analyzing data and information, and summarizing findings. The intern will also help ensure content accuracy by reviewing and editing drafts, fact and/or reference checking, and compiling and editing citations in academic style. The intern may also produce or edit figures, tables, and graphs supporting research outputs.
Event planning and coordination: The intern will aid in the planning and execution of public and private events on energy and climate issues, including compiling and/or creating event materials and signage, event set-up and coordinating with event staff, and greeting and directing guests. The intern may also be asked to take notes, and/or distill highlights from internal or external events.
Project and administrative support: The intern will track and summarize data on research and communications outputs, including Initiative publications and media mentions. They may also support the development of promotional materials, social media content, presentations, and/or graphics for the Initiative. In addition, the intern will support project administrative functions, such as updating databases and contact lists, or other support needs.
Graduate or undergraduate students (who have completed at least their sophomore year), working toward a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international affairs, energy policy, political science, etc.), may apply.
Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated familiarity with international energy and climate policies and practices, and experience summarizing and synthesizing academic and policy research. Strong candidates will also have experience in project and/or event planning and coordination. Willingness to conduct a broad array of tasks, including administrative functions is critical. English written and oral fluency is required.
Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, with strong written and oral communication skills, excellent time management skills, and the ability to balance multiple and sometimes competing priorities.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
