This external sponsorship/academic focused spring internship, beginning in January 2019, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year or graduate students with an interest in data analysis to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.
This internship for academic credit or with external sponsorship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work in a highly specialized setting. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
Students will receive customized training in Adobe Analytics to analyze website data. They will learn to analyze and correlate data, create segments for analysis, and develop dashboards to aggregate key findings. Analytics interns will compile reports and presentations for delivery to Brookings scholars and internal stakeholders. Interns will be taught introductory skills of digital marketing, including tracking code creation, social media reporting, and quality assurance testing of analytics implementations. They will use these new skills to create monthly and weekly reports and will analyze those reports for insights that advance the objectives of the Communications team’s strategic plan.
In addition to learning valuable skills in web analytics, interns will learn more about web best practices and content strategy. Interns will assist in managing topic pages and pages specifically tailored for journalists and media. Interns will assist the team in preparing for daily editorial meetings.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Graduate or undergraduate student (who has completed sophomore year) working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in statistics, applied math, economics, finance, computer science, political science, international relations, journalism, communications, or related fields, with an interest in data analysis.
Proficiency in Excel, strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as attention to detail required. An interest in working with and interpreting data is strongly valued. Curiosity about the function of a Communications department and a passion for online media are strongly valued. Familiarity with online analytics tools such as Google Analytics a plus.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
