This external sponsorship/academic focused spring internship, beginning in January 2019, is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year, recent college graduates, or graduate students with an interest in China to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment.
This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills
Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
Students will help develop the John L. Thonrton China Center’s communication and outreach capabilities and enhance the center’s social media presence. Under the supervision of the center’s staff, the intern will assist with creating, posting and translating content, promoting and live-tweeting events, and disseminating scholars’ commentary on important issues. Assignments will also include assisting the center with event planning and assisting the center’s scholars on research tasks on an as-needed basis. Students should end the internship with a better understanding of think tank outreach, social media strategy and coordination, and research and public policy promotion in the 21st Century.
Students will also gain first-hand experience in public policy and international affairs by assisting in the logistical planning and implementation of conferences, roundtables, briefings, and other meetings, attending foreign policy events, and general administrative support.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Graduate, undergraduate students (who have completed their sophomore year), or recent college graduates working towards a degree in a relevant field (i.e. international relations, China studies, etc.) may apply.
Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: Chinese political, social and economic issues, U.S. foreign policy in the region. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience developing and managing social media accounts, particularly on Twitter and WeChat, and designing graphics and webpages.
Fluency in both English and Chinese is required.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
