  • Overview

    This external sponsorship/academic credit fall internship, beginning in September 2018, is an unpaid opportunity for graduate students or undergraduates in their junior or senior year with an interest in U.S. foreign policy, grand strategy, and geopolitics to apply principles and theory in a professional environment. The internship will focus on a broad range of issues affecting the future of U.S. foreign policy, America's global role, and the return of great power competition.


    This unpaid internship provides a practical learning experience that offers meaningful work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.


    Learning Objectives


    Student interns will acquire substantive professional experience while working with the staff and scholars of the Project on International Order and Strategy (IOS) at Brookings. Interns will assume a variety of responsibilities and hone organizational, analytical, and professional interpersonal skills assisting the IOS team.


    Interns will gain first-hand experience in public policy and international affairs by assisting in the logistical planning and implementation of conferences, roundtables, briefings, and other meetings; researching developing issues in global security affairs; monitoring current developments in relevant research areas; proofreading, fact-checking, and editing research materials; collecting, reviewing, summarizing, and assembling relevant literature materials from a wide variety of sources; compiling and updating mailing, media, and invitation lists; attending foreign policy events; briefing IOS team members; and general administrative support.


    Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.





    Graduate or undergraduate students (currently in their junior or senior year) working towards a degree in a relevant field (e.g., history, international affairs, foreign policy, international security, political science, international law, or related fields) are encouraged to apply.


    Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: European or East Asian security affairs, U.S. alliance networks, or the history of U.S. foreign policy. English fluency is required. Superior writing and editing abilities, strong organizational and analytical skills, interpersonal acumen, and acute attention to detail are essential.

    Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
