This fall internship, beginning in September 2018, is a paid opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior year or senior year, recent college graduates or graduate students with an interest in events, communications and economics to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional environment. There are two positions available in Economic Studies (ES), one with The Hamilton Project and another with the ES communications team. All applicants will be considered for both positions.
This internship pays an hourly rate of $13.25, and applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
The intern will gain exposure to a range of economic policy issues while developing their communications, events, and writing skills. Applicants should expect a range of responsibilities, broadly defined under the following categories:
Event Outreach: The intern will provide support for all aspects of special event coordination for public forums and other events.
Communications Outreach: The intern will provide support for traditional and social media engagement efforts.
Office Support: The applicant should be prepared to help with general office support.
The Hamilton Project
The communications intern will support the work of the Managing Director, Events and Outreach Specialist, and Web Content and Graphic Design Specialist at The Hamilton Project.
Responsibilities include providing support with event coordination; developing and updating media lists; analyzing media coverage stakeholder research; drafting tweets and other content for social media and newsletters; providing support as needed, in drafting website content; copyediting various THP external documents; and completing other office support duties as assigned.
ES Communications Department
The communications intern will support the work of the Communications Director, Media Relations Manager, and Web and Social Media Specialist.
Responsibilities include developing and updating media lists; analyzing media coverage; drafting tweets and other content for social media and newsletters; copyediting reports and website content; providing support with event coordination; assisting staff throughout the program with communications-related tasks and completing other office support duties as assigned.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Applicants pursing a graduate, undergraduate degree (who have completed their sophomore year), or recent college graduates in journalism, political science, economics, or similar fields are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong writing and communications skills. Prior public affairs, event coordination or communications internship experience is desired.
A successful applicant will have a strong team work ethic and a belief that no task is too big or too small.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
