This external sponsorship/academic credit summer internship, beginning in June 2018, is an opportunity for graduate students or undergraduates in their junior or senior year with an interest in European affairs and transatlantic relations to support scholar research on matters of U.S. policy towards Europe, as well as the foreign policies of European states, and to apply principles and theory learned in the classroom in a professional enviroment. The internship will focus on a broad range of issues, including transatlantic relations; the future of the European Union; Russia; and nationalism, populism, and challenges to democracy.


This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.


Learning Objectives


Student interns will acquire substantive professional experience while working with the staff and scholars in the Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE) at Brookings by providing programmatic and administrative assistance, events coordination, and research support,. Interns will hone organizational, analytical, and professional interpersonal skills assisting CUSE in its mission to foster high-level U.S.-European dialogue on the changes in Europe and the global challenges that affect transatlantic relations.


Interns will gain first-hand experience in public policy and international affairs by assisting in the logistical planning and implementation of conferences, roundtables, briefings, and other meetings; researching developing issues in Europe; monitoring current developments in relevant research areas; proofreading, fact-checking, and editing research materials; collecting, reviewing, summarizing, and assembling relevant literature materials from a wide variety of sources; compiling and updating mailing, media, and invitation lists; attending foreign policy events; briefing CUSE staff members; and general administrative support.


Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.






Graduate or undergraduate students (who have completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in a relevant field (e.g., international affairs, foreign policy, international security, political science, international law, or other related field) are encouraged to apply.


Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: European affairs, the European Union, transatlantic relations, Russia, and European security issues. English fluency is required; proficiency in additional language(s) is also desired. Superior writing and editing abilities, strong organizational and analytical skills, interpersonal acumen, and acute attention to detail are essential.
